3. In all of his life Jesus presents himself as our model. He is "the perfect man", who invites us to become his disciples and follow him. In humbling himself, he has given us an example to imitate, through his prayer he draws us to pray, and by his poverty he calls us to accept freely the privation and persecutions that may come our way. CCC520 • Define the three characteristics of discipleship!

4. R.S.V.P. to Christ Invitation!! • Discipleship--: one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of Jesus • Response involves recognition of Jesus as savior and willingness to serve • Resurrection event = central unifying story of all Christians! • Practical implications: Catholics are baptized and live as Priest, Prophet, and King. CCC 908 • What does this mean?

5. Priest, Prophet and King • At your baptism you were marked with oil as a sign that you are consecrated to God and anointed by the Holy Spirit. • Your anointing also was a sign that you are joined to Christ and share in his threefold mission as prophet, priest, and king. • The Israelites anointed their priests and kings with oil. They spoke of their prophets as being anointed with the spirit.

God’s Gifts • Talents and aptitude • Gifts of the Holy Spirit • The gift of wisdom corresponds to the virtue of charity. • The gift of understanding corresponds to the virtue of faith. • The gift of counsel (right judgment) corresponds to the virtue of prudence. • The gift of fortitude corresponds to the virtue of courage. • The gift of knowledge corresponds to the virtue of faith. • The gift of piety corresponds to the virtue of justice. • The gift of fear of the Lord corresponds to the virtue of hope.

9. Cont… • A prophet is a messenger sent by God, a person who speaks for God. He or she witnesses to God, calls people to conversion. (Anointed with Holy Spirit) • A priest is a mediator, or bridge, between God and human beings. He offers sacrifice to God on behalf of all. (Anointed with oil) • A king is a person who has supreme authority over a territory. (Anointed with oil)

10. Religion and Faith • Religion: a set of beliefs and practices followed by those committed to the service and worship of God. • Explain religion as a response to our faith. • Religion is reflected in and through the life of the Church: • 1.) founded by Christ • 2.) as the Body of Christ • 3.) unified by one baptism • 4.) guarded by and entrusted to the Magisterium

11. Faith • Allegiance to duty or a person • Belief and trust in and loyalty to God • belief in the traditional doctrines of a religion • Hebrew means essentially steadfastness

12. Four Marks of the Church • The Nicene Creed declares the Church to be • One: The sacred mystery of the Church's unity • Holy: The Church is held to be unfailingly holy b/c of Christ • Catholic: universal • b/c presence of Christ and mission by Christ • Apostolic: Apostolicity is the mark by which the Church of today is recognized as identical with the Church founded by Jesus Christ upon the Apostles.

13. Nicene Creed • We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. • We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father. • Through Him all things were made. For us men and our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. • For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried.

14. Cont… • On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures: He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. • He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. • With the Father and the Son, He is worshiped and glorified.

15. Cont… • He has spoken through the Prophets. • We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. • We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. • We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. • Amen.

16. Creeds • I believe" (Apostles' Creed) is the faith of the Church professed personally by each believer, principally during Baptism. • Not all beliefs included • "We believe" (Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed) is the faith of the Church confessed by the bishops assembled in council or more generally by the liturgical assembly of believers.
