For both Security and Sustainability: • Compliance First, then pursue Model achievements and behavior • Maintain and Improve The new millennium brought with it the 9/11 attacks. Significant emphasis on Security and Anti-terrorism changed the management of federal facilities. Security Emphasis

The Mark Center provides an example of how to combine Antiterrorism Standards with “Green” Policy • Built to UFC Standards • Located in the Urban Core of Alexandria, VA • Implements newest energy-efficient systems and strategies for utility delivery • Consolidates Government presence to reduce carbon footprint • Being built to LEED Gold standards BRAC 133 Project at Mark Center
Provides an example of how to combine Antiterrorism Standards with Green Policy in a leased location • Being built as part of a development that is participating in the LEED Neighborhood Design (ND) pilot program. Developer is looking to achieve Gold certification. • Building site will be a remediated brownfield • First ATFP compliant building in Arlington, VA • DARPA investigating ways to reach Gold or Platinum LEED certification beyond the GSA and DoD requirement of Silver Certification DARPA Project in Ballston
Security and Sustainability are not incompatible • Build your plans with the both as requirements • The strength of relationships between professionals is critical • Strong committed leadership is required • Approach solving the challenges from multiple angles • 9/11 lessons • Give people the means get out – pathways and directions • Blast windows and wall reinforcements work • The Pentagon is a tough old dame • Emergencies and crises happen. Prepare, Respond, Recover, and Mitigate. Review your strategies against lessons learned, but if you have a good plan return to your path. If you do need to change the plan, don’t sweat it. Retain the best and reflect on the lesson. • People of good will with creative minds and common vision are critical to success Lessons Learned
