  2. MMSB Overview • A provincial Crown agency established in 1996 • Arms length from government • Independent Board of Directors • Self financing – no government funding

MMSB Mandate • Mandate derived from legislation, provincial waste management strategy and strategic business plan • Mandate is threefold • develop/manage waste reduction, waste diversion and recycling programs at provincial level as set by government • develop/implement province-wide public education and awareness programs on waste management in general • utilize the Waste Management Trust Fund to support the implementation of the PWMS

Provincial Waste Management Strategy Primary Goals • 50% waste diversion by 2015 • reduce waste disposal sites by 80% • eliminate open burning - 2008 • eliminate incinerators – 2015 • phase out unlined landfills – 2020 • province wide modern system - 2020 Five Key Actions • increase waste diversion • establish a regional approach to waste management • develop modern waste disposal standards • maximize economic-employment opportunities • public education
