  1. Day …2/14/11 TOPIC: Universal Law of Gravitation OBJ: I can describe the gravitational force between two object based on their masses and distance apart STARTER: (put in vocab section) Terminal Speed-The maximum speed an object in free fall reaches. At the terminal speed Fgravity and Fair resistance are balanced and the object moves at constant speed. Centripetal Force-a force that causes an object to move in a circle.

  2. Question 1 A boy throws a baseball up in the air at 5m/s. What is the balls velocity at the top of its trajectory (arc)? A. 5 m/s B. 9.8 m/s C. 0 m/s D. -9.8 m/s NOTE: Acceleration due To gravity is -9.8m/s/s

  3. Question 2 Three identical shaped bowling balls are dropped from the roof of the school. Their masses are: 5kg, 10kg, 15kg. Which bowling ball hits the ground first? A. 5kg B. 10kg C. 15kg D. All hit at same time ALL objects accelerate toward the center of earth at the SAME rate of -9.8m/s/s(when close to the surface of the earth).

  4. Air Resistance Air Resistance Question 3 What two forces are involved in “terminal velocity”? A. Gravity and velocity B. Velocity and air resistance C. Gravity and air resistance D. Gravity and normal force

  5. Question 4 James Bond is in free fall after jumping from an airplane (neglect air resistance). He sees the bad guy below, also in free fall below him. Intent on catching him, Bond flips over, stretches his arms over his head, pointing downward, and zooms downward. Do you think Bond can catch up with the bad guy? A. Yes, he will catch him B. No, he will not catch him …because, WITHOUT air resistance, BOTH skydivers are accelerating at the SAME RATE OF -9.8m/s/s. There velocities will therefore be equal.

  6. Question 5 A rock is dropped from bridge and hits the water 1.75 seconds later. What is its final velocity? A. -17.2 m/s B. -5.6 m/s C. -8.6 m/s D. -9.8 m/s Use a template please: Looking For: Given: Relationship/Formula: Solution: Vf t = 1.75s ; g = -9.8 m/s/s ; Vi = 0 m/s Vf = Vi + gt Vf = (0m/s) + (-9.8m/s/s)x(1.75s) Vf = -17.2m/s

  7. Question 6 A rock is dropped from bridge and hits the water 1.75 seconds later. How high is the bridge? A. 34.3 m B. 15.0 m C. 8.6 m D. 17.2 m Use a template please: Looking For: Given: Relationship/Formula: Solution: How high, which is (y) g = -9.8m/s/s t= 1.75s y = (1/2)gt2 y = (1/2)(-9.8m/s/s)(1.752) y = -15.0 m The bridge is 15.0 m high.

  8. Universal Law of GravitationNotes: CPO Text pp 151-153 4 boxes 6 boxes 6 boxes The remainder Force centripetal Keeps objects in Circular motion How is the force of gravity related to planets & moons? Planets & Moons 151 What is weight? The force between you & the earth. Depends on your mass, Planet’s mass, and distance From the center of planet 151 Weight .
