ILL & Acquisitions: Working Together • Background • Procedures & Criteria • Evaluation & Retooling • Results
Background • Problems obtaining current year imprints • Too new for ILL/not published yet • Checked out at lending libraries • Lending libraries won’t lend
Options? • Review of the Literature • Buy vs. Borrow • Just-in-time Acquisitions • Books on Demand • UVA’s Purchase Express • Alibris – via OCLC
W&M’s Pilot Project-2004 • Analyzed data from ILL in 2003 • Created 2 scenarios—latest 3 yrs vs. 1 yr • How many potential purchases? • How much $ would be needed? • Impose any limits? • Keep it small—Current year imprints only
Procedures & Criteria • Written procedures–agreed upon by both depts. • Request will be reviewed for CD • Do we want this in the collection? • Request will be handled as a RUSH • Acquisitions will report back to ILL if cannot receive book in 5 days • Continue with purchase? • Refer back to ILL?
Procedures & Criteria –ILL • Check online catalog • Already on order? Owned? • Check GOBI – approval plan • Check Amazon.com • Must be readily available • Generate the order
The Numbers • 75=Number of books ordered in 2004 • ~$2800.00 = Charges to the GEN-ILL account • 8=Number of books on order for other funds
Evaluation & Retooling • ILL made mistakes… • Acquisitions made mistakes… • Then we corrected them!
Results • Positive feedback from patrons • Pleased that we are adding it to the collection • Longer check out times/renewals now available • Can access again easily • The pilot project is working • Acceptable turnaround times • In-demand items being added to the collection • Circulation statistics support what we are doing
