  2. Transportation • The main modes of transportation during the 1930’s were the train and the car. • There was also a tram car, or a trolley, that provided a taxi service. • In 1930, around one family in twenty owned an automobile. • Air travel began to grow at a rapid pace during this time too.

  3. Communication • The 1930’s was the Golden Age of radio. • Radios were used for news, music, and comedy shows. • Franklin D. Roosevelt used Fireside Chats to reassure the nation during the time of the Great Depression. • Telephones along with newspapers were also used for communication.

  4. Scientific advances • The world’s tallest building goes up in New York City. The Empire State Building stands 1,472 feet tall with 102 stories. The project was completed May 1, 1931. • Dr. Robert Goddard tests a liquid oxygen and gasoline rocket in New Mexico. December 1930 the first rocket reached 2,000 feet, and in March 1935 another rocket reached 5,000 feet at 550 miles per hour.

  5. Sports news • 1932 summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. Babe Didrikson won three gold medals. • 1936 summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Adolf Hitler was humiliated by the U.S. • The “Iron Horse” Lou Gehrig retires from baseball. After fourteen seasons with the Yankees and astounding statistics, a crippling illness forced his retirement.

National Headlines • The Dust Bowl occurred from 1930-1936 devastating the Great Plains. • In 1931 the “Star Spangled Banner” became the national anthem. • On May 1, 1931, the Empire State Building was opened in New York City. • At the beginning of 1933 Roosevelt ordered all banks to close. • Roosevelt organized a series of bills in 1933 to fix the economic troubles of the Great Depression. • American pilot, Amelia Earhart, disappeared on her attempt to fly around the world in July of 1938.

International Headlines • The smallest planet, Pluto was discovered in 1930. • WWII was underway in European nations and America was focused on staying out of the war. • In 1937 German Hindenburg are ship burned to the ground and thirty-three were killed. • Adolf Hitler had been persecuting Jews for almost fifteen years at this point in the war. • The Munich Conference was held on the 29th and 30th of September 1938, where Hitler met with leaders from France, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

Natural Disasters • The weather of the 1930’s was far beyond the natural cycle. • The Dust Bowl lasted from 1930-1936 causing extreme drought and hardship among Americans. • In March of 1933 an outbreak of devastating tornadoes swept across Nashville, Tennessee. • Nineteen hurricanes hit the US mainland during the years 1930-1939.

Music • During the 30’s America’s taste in music drastically changed from bland and “sweet” to more rhythmically involved and aggressive. • Big bands became popular. • A new style of music was born called the “swing.” • The electric guitar and organ were invented. • Famous singers included Ella Fitzgerald, The Ink Spots, and Duke Ellington.

Fashion • The “smart appearance” became fashionable as well as respectable. • Clothes for both sexes became more plentiful through chain stores. • Casual clothes started to take a gradual trend. Women Men Tailored, close fitting clothes that gave a sliming look became popular. Men were rarely seen out of the house without a hat and jacket The straw “boater” hat was in style.

  13. Pop Culture • Gambling • “Golden Age of Radio” • “It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing.” • Swing music dominated during this time period.

  18. Changing Roles • Women left the “flapper” style behind to become housewives. • Women also began to gain higher positions. • Two percent of all American lawyers and judges were women.
