GPM Radiometer Simulator • Requirements • Simulator retrievals cannot make use of empirically adjusted parameter (e.g., rain/no rain discrimination) • Simulator must work for any sensor design • Simulator must have enough realism to reproduce current retrieval capabilities • The Simulator Package—Procedure • Non-raining retrieval from TRMM TMI (SST, Sfc wind, CLW, CWV) • Interpolate parameters across raining scenes • Regrid TMI-derived parameters to TRMM-PR resolution • Replace raining pixels in PR by cloud model (CRM simulations) that best fit reflectivity profile
GPM Radiometer Simulator • Retrieval uses Bayesian methodology planned for GPM • Core satellite generates database of cloud/precipitation scenes • Constellation satellites select appropriate subset of database consistent with its measurements. Verification of procedure using TMI data Retrieval from Simulator Operational TRMM-TMI Rainfall Similarity of operational product and simulator rain provides confidence that simulator has adequate realism.
