History of Paper Industry Innovation • 105 A.D. Chinese invent papermaking with rags, bamboo • 600-700 Arabs, Italians: water power, wire moulds, screw press • 1300-1400 Germans: Mill concept • 1500-1600 Hollander Beater • 1700-1800 Fourdrinier, Clylinder machines • 1800-1900 Mechanization, GW and Chemical wood pulps • 1900-1950 Electric drive, faster & wider machines
History of Paper Industry Innovation • 1950-1980 New fillers, additives; neutral sizes, retention aids, grade specializaton(LWC), TMP and DIP pulps • 1980-today Gap formers, shoe presses, layered headboxes, tree plantations, microparticle retention systems, satellite PCC What’s Next ? • Biorefinery • Nanotechnology • Fiber-Filler Composite systems • Effective paper coffee cup
Food for Thought & Discussion - 1 • Successful Innovation is more than just new paper technology • It can be: • New business model • Logistical breakthrough • New way to market • Need to have these skill sets in your organization working together effectively
Food for Thought & Discussion - 2 • Paper Industry Needs More and Better ”Open Innovation” • Allow quality ideas to filter into and out of company • We need to: • Have more inter-industry cooperation • Tie into government funding (through academia) • Be able to enhance but protect internal knowledge and technologies (core business strengths) • Aggressively fund breakthrough idea potentials
Food for Thought & Discussion - 3 • To successfully innovate, you need to know your customer • His business • His technology • His strategic goals • His competitors • His customers • Without this, even great ideas will fail or be delayed in execution.
Food for Thought & Discussion - 4 • To successfully innovate, you need to give your most creative employees time to think • Schedule ”non-firefighting” time • Encourage and reward new ideas • Have system in place to develop new ideas • Need critical mass of creative people
Don’t give mixed signals…. • show that you expect innovation • assemble critical mass of right people • furnish them with tools and time
