  1. Plate Tectonics Unit 2: Tectonic Processes Ms. Thind

  2. Tectonic Forces • Earth’s crust subject to internal pressure and stress that originates within earth. Where are convection currents taking place? Asthenosphere (upper mantle)

  3. Think back: What is the continental crust made of? “Sial” Less dense material float to the top Oceanic Crust? “Sima” dense layer of basalt underneath the less dense material

  4. Theory of Isotacy • Constant attempt of continental block (sial) to achieve a state of equilibrium • Theory that explains that continents are “floating” on dense material *take a look at pg. 89*

  5. Continental Drift • Process that outlines that continents are slowly drifting apart from fuelled by convection currents pulling the land apart. • Evidence that supports continental drift? *take notes on pg.90-94 to outline the 6 claims that support the process*

  6. Theory of Pangea

  7. Coastline Fit • Geologic Fit • Paleoclimatology • Paleoglaciation • Fossil Correlation • Paleomagnitism

  8. Plate Tectonics • Lithosphere consists of a number of rigid slow moving plates • Plates are moving in 3 ways: 1. Moving apart: plate formation 2. Moving together: plate destruction 3. Moving past each other Who can draw and explain each of these processes?
