Low self-esteem results from being loved or appreciated only if you achieve specific results. Thus, self worth becomes tied to achieving specific goals that are expected of you. If you have little inclination or ability to achieve them, you may either feel guilty to follow your dharma, or afraid you won’t be loved if you do.
