Introduction The main concept of this short story is to show how people’s attitudes vary and also change throughout the course of a time period. The main character’s father, Varma, goes through an abundant amount of changes within his personality throughout the story. Rakesh, the son of Varma, started his employment as a worker in the kerosene dealer's depot, which is located in India.
Everything looks to be going well… Over the course of time, Rakeshmakes his way up through the medical field. His success is celebrated by family, which included happiness and joy. He was also admired for his devotion and respect towards his parents. He soon leaves his home country of India to move to America, in order to move up even further in his medical career. He later moves back to India in order to fulfill his mother’s needs of marrying the girl of her choice.
Can it get any better? Rackesh soon settles down with his new wife and opens up his own clinic. Life begins to peak at an all time high for Rackesh when he learns that he claimed the title of best surgeon in his Town. Overall, this is the highest achievement he has mad in his lifetime.
Life begins to spiral downwards As time flies by, his mother dies. This leads Rakeshinto thinking that he should start taking care of his father now. Practically, Rackesh did everything he possibly could in order to help his father go through life in high spirits. Rakeshlater on catches his son sneaking junk food for Varma and he becomes furious towards Varma. The tension puts a small amount of strain on Rakesh’ and his father’s relationship.
The depression begins Soon after their feud, Varma’s need for medication increases. Rakeshstill does what he can to help prove that he is a devoted son, but it seems that Varma goes into a depressed state and does not want to believe anything Rakeshsays.
Conclusion to the story When Varma’s loneliness begins to intensify, he starts to believe that there isn’t a reason to live any longer, although his son believes completely different. Varma then stops taking his medication and also fails to recognize that Rakeshwas a devoted son. He soon dies, refusing to recognize it.
