My Contact Info and Bio • Dr. Austin, polssdw@ufl.edu, 392-0262, https://people.clas.ufl.edu/polssdw/courses/course-1/ • Professor of Political Science • UF Professor since 2001 • Sixth time teaching the African Americans in Paris class • Conversational French • Teaching and research interests in minority politics, American government, public policy, and African American Studies.
The Cost ($2,846 for Undergraduates) Includes: • Round-trip travel from the Charles de Gaulle airport to the hotel • Accommodations at a three-star Parisian hotel (Le Ibis Bercy) • Breakfast daily, a welcome and farewell dinner • A subway pass • Tickets to all sites • An on-site orientation • Pre-departure materials • Computer and internet access at the hotel and API Center
Does Not Include: • Airfare • Luggage fees • Medical and life insurance • Personal expenses (passport fees, spending money, most meals) • You will need a passport, but not a visa. • You do not have to speak French • I will meet with the students at least once before we leave to assist with flight arrangements, get your contact information, and provide information about things you’ll need to take.

3 Funding Sources • The Center for European Studies offers a $500 scholarship to a student participant in the African Americans in Paris program. The deadline for this scholarship is December 14th. Information about the application process can be found at https://ces.ufl.edu/fellowships-2/student-fellowships/study-abroad-travel-grants/. • Dr. Sharon Austin also provides a $500 scholarship to at least one student participant in the class. Information can be found by emailing her at polssdw@ufl.edu or clicking on the link Austin Scholarship for the Paris class. The Class Consists Of: • Two online lectures (about 10 minutes each) from our youtube page. • Online documentaries and films (45 -75 minutes each) • One Textbook: • African Americans in the City of Light by Tyler Stovall • 4 or 5 papers (depending on whether you receive 2 or 3 credits) • Four are 3-4 pages each for students getting 2 credits. • Students receiving 3 credits must write an addition 8-12 page paper that is due before the spring semester ends.
Tentative Itinerary in Paris • Sunday– Arrival and hotel check-in, orientation, dinner. A mini van will meet us and take us to the hotel. • Monday– Breakfast, 3 hour Black Paris bus tour, lunch, Afternoon Harlem sur Seine to Africa tour, free evening. • Tuesday March 7 – Breakfast, Tour of Alexandre Dumas’ and Josephine Baker’s homes in suburban Paris, lunch, Chocolat movie in the evening, optional tickets to the Eiffel tower.
Continued • Wednesday March 8 – Breakfast, Tour of Paris Parliament, lunch, Musee’ de L’Immigration tour, free evening • Thursday March 9 – Free Travel Day • Friday March 10 – Breakfast, Free morning, lunch, Black art tour at the Louvre, Boat cruise of River Seine, farewell dinner or cooking class. • Saturday March 11 – Breakfast, Tour of Versailles Palace on your own, free afternoon and evening. • Sunday March 12 – Departure. A minivan will take us to the airport.
Other Things • Let me know if you’d like to go to Paris early or stay later than Sunday so that we can arrange for you to stay at the hotel. • We’ll meet again before the semester ends and again when the spring semester begins. • Deadline for the deposit is December 1st. We need 12 students to be able to go.
