Local Flash Change • Local numbers changed in six areas of the country on 22 April 2000 • Communications intensified over three months prior and continued over the period • Misdials were 18% on the first working day back - lower than for PhONEday “They said it would be chaos - but it wasn’t” BBC 9 o’clock news 25/04/00

Safety Net • Parallel running in place for national dialling(all 6 areas) • Staggered switch off dates • Cardiff on 5 August • Coventry on 19 August • Portsmouth and Southampton on 2 September • Northern Ireland on 16 September • London on 14 October • In addition switch off of 000 international ISDN code on 30 September

  5. Dialling Behaviour • Post April around third of people dialling nationally used old codes and numbers • ‘Hidden numbers’ represent many of calls made using old codes and numbers • Mobile and phone memories • Faxes • Computer databases • Routers and alarms

  6. Dialling Behaviour • ‘Hidden numbers’ focus for communications campaign • Voice calls get recorded announcement • Data calls will not recognise these and continue to misdial

End of Parallel Running • All areas except London have now switched off • Misdials no threat to network • Between 1 in 3 and 1 in 4 calls dialled the old codes on the day of the switch offs • Generally dropped to 1 in 5 within a couple of days • 2 weeks after switch off only 5% of calls still made using old codes and numbers

  8. Next Steps • London switch off on 14 October • Post 14 October the campaign will focus on • non 07 mobiles • non 08 special rate numbers • Switch off date is 28 April 2001
