Interview Example 1 Here is what not to do…
Preparation • Do your Research!! • Gather Information from the Company’s Website • Use Search Engines like Google, AltaVista, and Yahoo • Show Interest by Having Questions Prepared Prior to the Interview
Practice • Practice in front of a mirror, or with a friend • Anticipate probable questions • Take advantage of Mock Interview Opportunities by talking with your career services department or a subject-matter expert • Practice the questions that you have prepared
Participate • Show Interest – Participate! • Interviews are not one-sided conversations, you should not only answer questions, but ask them as well. • Take Notes!! • Come prepared with 10-15 questions.
Polished Professional • How you dress DOES matter • Clean and Neat • Avoid strong perfumes or colognes, as well as excessive amounts of jewelry
Posture and Palms • Handshake Mistakes- • Limp wrist- dead fish • Bubba’s bone crusher • Miss polite • Handshake exercise…. Everyone stand up! • Eye contact- no looking at the ground! Not so Good Better!
Proper Intro • Introduce Yourself -- Ensure that everyone knows your name! • Address the interviewer properly. Use Ms/Mr/Dr unless asked otherwise. • Follow the interviewer’s lead!
Positive Attitude • Based on a recent survey, 84% of people found positive attitudes to be the most appealing trait or behavior to have during an interview. • Make sure you portray a positive attitude through your body language, questions, and overall behavior. • Avoid talking negatively about past experiences.
Presentation of You • BE YOURSELF!! • Be confident about your resume and your accomplishments. • Follow the Interviewer’s Lead – Watch for Visual Cues
Past Achievements • Be Specific! • Be Honest – Don’t Embellish • Avoid talking poorly about co-workers, peers, or professors. • If it’s on your resume, be prepared to talk about it!
Perseverance • List the Pro’s and Con’s of the Position and the Company. • Follow up the same day with Thank You Notes to everyone that you met (ask for business cards) • Ask what the next step is and get a date!

Directions • Tables will be given a resume (A-E) • Pick a table captain • 15 minute table discussion • List the pro’s and con’s • Table Captains will lead group discussion on each resume
