About UNICEF UNICEF is the driving force that helps build a world where the rights of every child are realized.
They believe that nurturing and caring for children are the cornerstones of human progress. Every child has the right to the best possible start in life.UNICEF was created with this purpose in mind – to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path.
History • UNICEF-The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, was created by the United NationsGeneral Assembly on December 11, 1946, to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in countries that had been devastated by World War II. In 1953, UNICEF became a permanent part of the United Nations System and its name was shortened to United Nations Children's Fund but it has continued to be known by the popular acronym based on this old name
Headquartered in New York City, UNICEF provides long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.
Funding UNICEF relies on contributions from governments and private donors Governments contribute two thirds of the organization's resources; private groups and some 6 million individuals contribute the rest through the National Committees.
Right now, the worst humanitarian crisis of the last 50 years is happening in East Africa. • Children across the region are facing a desperate crisis caused by drought, high food prices and ongoing conflict in Somalia. • 6.7 million children need urgent help, over 320,000 of whom are severely malnourished and need immediate life-saving assistance. • Just £5 will help UNICEF feed a child for a week. With the right treatment, a child can recover in six weeks.
£130 could help protect 1,000 children from Polio £210 could buy 50 mosquito nets, to protect fifty families from malaria. Malaria kills one African child every 30 seconds. £95could buy enough water kits for 10 families £680 could buy a rainwater-harvesting system for a school. This rainwater-harvesting system will provide safe, clean water for all the children in a school to drink.
