Crime dramas: • are constructed realities • depict constructed versions of reality that appeal to audiences • encode hegemonic values and ideologies • represent current societal responses to crime • use formulas • employ some stereotypical representations • make iconic use of hand guns, police cars, banks, uniformed and un-uniformed police, and explosions

Narrative • An episode narrative homes in on the human characteristics of each member of the team to show how a particular character deals with a particular situation. A typical plot line allows a main character to work through a situation to possible growth and maturity, although this is rarely followed up.

  8. Narrative • Most plots centre around: • whodunit narrative • how a particular police officer will deal with a crime situation (e.g. body parts found in a field) • tension between the uniformed officers and the CID while unravelling a difficult situation

  9. Narrative • The audience is encouraged to actively participate in the piecing together of the puzzle in a manner that is not possible with many genres. The satisfaction felt by the audience in reaching the solution before the television detective is a much appreciated source of entertainment.

  10. AQT or American Quality Television • AQT is not considered to be ‘regular TV’ as it breaks traditional rules such as not having a narrative closure even at the end of the series. The series The Wire is considered by many commentators to be one of the finest crime series ever made, even in comparision with the more gangster orientated The Sopranos.

Examples of AQT in the crime drama genre include  • 24, ER, and CSI, and in other genres Lost, Desperate Housewives and The West Wing • Notable characteristics of this form of quality television programming are that it attracts an upmarket, well educated, urban audience, and works with an ensemble cast. The programmes focus on a group of characters, rather than one protagonist as British crime drama tends to do.

AQT is postmodern. • It is self conscious and can use intertextual references to itself and other TV programmes.  • often referencing political ideas and events. • Realism is the dominant characteristic with high production values and often elaborate mise-en-scènes with glossy interiors and emphasis on new technologies.  • AQTutilises viral publicity generated by websites, blogs, chat rooms and social networking sites.
