  2. Mandalas-The word mandala comes from a Sanskrit word meaning circle.-These works of art are rich in symbolism and sacred meaning.

  3. Symbols-Footprint-Symbolizes the presence of the Buddha.-Represents that even though the Buddha is no longer with us, his teachings remain

  4. Symbols-The Endless Knot-Representing the intertwining of wisdom and compassion, the perfection of knowledge.-symbolizes the nature of reality where everything is interrelated and only exists as part of a web of karma and its effect.

  5. Symbols-The Begging Bowl-One of the few possessions the Buddha carried with him. Followers would place food into the bowl.-Shortly before reaching enlightenment, Siddhartha realized that he would need to have more strength for the final steps to enlightenment, and further fasting would only reduce his energy.

  6. Symbols-The Lotus-With its roots in the mud, the lotus still rises above the surface of the water as a pure, perfect flower.-As it grows through the mud (samsara), up through muddy water it will finally produce a beautiful flower (enlightenment).-It is also said that lotus flowers blossomed at the feet of Siddharthawhen he took his first steps.

  7. Symbols-The Bodhi Tree-Symbolizes the tree under which the Buddha achieved enlightenment.

  8. Symbols-A straight line-Represents the Buddhist belief in the middle way between human desires and denying oneself any pleasure. -The path of moderation.

  9. Symbols-A Circle-Represents Samsara-the cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth

  10. Symbols-The many images of the Buddha-Share similar characteristics/identifying features-Examples-The eye of wisdom & The eight-spoked wheel.
