MILGRAM: WHERE WERE THE ETHICS BEHIND HIM? He was very deceitful about it,first of all Milgram lied to the particpiants about what the experiment was really about, then made to believe they are really giving shocks and quite possibly killed someone. This goes against the ethical guidelines that experimenters must not use real or feign injury during the course of the experiment, however Milgrams argument was that the ethical guidelines were introduced after his experiment. The aim of the experiment was to see why and how people respond to authority and if authority caused cause them to commit acts of evil. Milgram’s results have helped us understand why normal or rational people can commit crimes against other human beings just because they are told to by an authority, this knowledge could be used to psycho-analyise future tyrants and prevent other atrocities such as the holocaust. The Milgram shock experiment is thought to be the most controversial, but greatest social psychological breakthrough in history. Hoever there is much debate over the use of ethics in this experiment, ethical issues that have aroused the debate; should the experiment ever have been allowed to take place?
