1. Content Standards • 10.6.1: Analyze the aims and negotiating roles of world leaders, the terms and influence of the Treaty of Versailles and Woodrow Wilson’s Fourteen Points, and the cause and effect of the United States rejection of the League of Nations on world politics.

4. Treaty of Versailles: A Flawed Peace

5. Setting the Stage • The German Kaiser has surrendered. The Great War is over after years of war and death. Much of the land is devastated and billions have been spent. The victorious members meet at the Palace of Versailles to determine the treaty terms. Their decisions at this meeting will have long lasting implications for the future.

8. What President Wilson (USA) Wanted • Created Fourteen Points plan • GOAL: TO END ALL WARS • Some ideas: • Self determination (self rule for all colonies) • End to secret treaties • Limit on weapons • Creation of a League of Nations an international peace keeping organization

The Allies Response • Britain and France did not agree with Wilson’s peace plan • They wanted to strip Germany of its ability to make war • France and England lost about 1 million men each and wanted to see Germany suffer • These differences resulted in arguments between the Allies but they are eventually able to create a compromise which became the Treaty of Versailles

Results of the Treaty of Versailles • The U.S. rejected the treaty • They did not join the League of Nations which weakened the organization • Did not want to get dragged into another war • America negotiated their own treaty with the Central Powers • “European” war • Germany felt extreme bitterness with their treatment • Especially the war guilt clause • This anger would eventually lead to WWII • Africa and Asia were upset that they did not get their independence • The League of Nations fail - lacked real power and could not solve world problems
