Industrialization progress: NewFlex (-> GEMs) 10x10 GEM tests • Successfully produced first 7x7 GEM foil • June 2011 => tested at CERN OK • Successfully produced 20 foils of 10x10 • January 2012 => tested at CERN OK • GEM license agreement • March 2012 => license signed by Newflex • End April 2012 => launched production 30 GEM foils 30x30 NS2 • => foil qualification check included • => delivery planned by end June 2012 • Larger samples (~50x50) after successful test of 30x30 • => possibly to take a known needed case More from Sung Park presentation Relative gain stability F. GEM qualification procedure for Newflex • This time we asked Newflex to carry out a basic QC test for GEM foil validation • We will only buy good foils, but we would like to have a full report • It has initially been specified standard cleaning, as performed by their production machines 2 Microscope inspection (few areas) 1 Visual inspection 3 Free air HV test Lighter area <0.1 mm2 Ileak<10 nA @ HV=600 V tr=12 s tamb, 1 amt, RH=35% no sparks 70 µm ± 2 µm 50 µm ± 5 µm 2 defects max, <1 mm2 F. Industrialization progress: Eltos (-> Micromegas) • November 2011 => Performed first time knowledge transfer for metallic MMs: • Two 10x10 MMs “bulked” with local supervision of CERN expert (PCB and mesh stretching done by them, in-house standard cleaning) • February 2012 => Test at CERN: • one detector had high spark rate (cleaning?) other was usable and performed similarly to CERN reference • March 2012 => resistive MM training course at CERN • April 2012 => production 3 samples 10x10 Res. Industrialization progress: Cirea (-> Micromegas) • Reference company for CEA Saclay for Micromegas R&D • March 2012 => meeting at CERN: CIREA declares willingness to contribute to MM industrialization and wish to acquire full knowledge for reference MM models • March 2012 => resistive MM training course at CERN • April 2012 => production 3 samples 10x10 Res. CERN training on Resistive Micromegas • Good time to organize this training because: • Res. MM is a mature and reliable technology • It uses fully standard PCB techniques • It is compatible with tool machines for large series • 1+½ days training on Res MM technology to Eltos and Cirea (end March 2012) • Course based on theoretical explanations and practical demonstrations • 2 “chief” trainers from the workshop (workshop contribution) 4) Bulking 3) Questions 2) Practice 1) Theory Home work asked to Eltos and Cirea : produce samples of Res. Industrialization progress: Techtra (-> GEMs) • January 2012 => visit to Techtra for discussing new facilities for GEM foil production • February 2012 => Techtra decision to upgrade to larger machines (target 65x220cm2) • => identified new 200m2 location in Technology Park (cut into 3 rooms) • => started experiencing single mask technology • April 2012 => CERN technical consultation to help in machine range selection • May 2012 => Techtra met WISE to discuss purchasing polyamide etching machine • => Purchasing of second hand machines -> Techtra visiting companies to check machine suitability • => Requested quotation for microscope adapted to large GEMs (2m x 1m) • Ready to be operative in upgraded configuration: probably not before end 2012 F. Industrialization progress: TechEtch (-> GEMs) • Already producing GEM foils • Contact refreshed by Rui in January 2012 • Declared interest to upgrade to GEM single mask process -> CERN to explain procedure • Concerning large sizes (0.5x1.2m2) they cannot yet deal with long foils (polyimide etching) • They are seeking collaboration with MIT for R&D money for large single mask project • Waiting for their feedback on status of this project F. Next steps on Micromegas industrialization • Discussion w/ representatives of RD51, Atlas CERN and INFN, Saclay and EM workshop (M. Titov – June 13th) • What next industrialization steps after resistive bulk 10x10 ? • Proposed to take an existing need vs. existing too large size layout • RD51 agrees to contribute to the new layout cost • Atlas Mamma can provide support for the prototype testing • Companies and contact persons for MM industrialization and test organization: • Cirea <--> Fabien Jeanneau (Saclay) • Eltos <--> Giovanni Maccarrone (INFN) • Additionally it was also invited to contribute to industrialization: • Triangle Labs <--> VenetiosPolychronakos (BNL) • WG6 will coordinate information flow and assure good synchronization • Period of MM fabrication practice for contact persons in the EM workshop for KT • One INFN technician will spend ~2 months in ~Sept/Oct/Nov 2012 • Fabien will spend ~4weeks in ~July/August F. Last three large PCB machines for the workshop 1.2 m • Machines arrived May 23rd • Some infrastructures to be updated in workshop (electricity + piping) • 5 days planned installation time (w/ people coming from manufacturer) • Installation planned for 3Q12 (fitting production priorities and people from manufacturer) F. Progress on CERN resources for MPGDs • CERN investments for machines: • Completed arrival of new equipments for large size GEM & Micromegas manufacturing • 9 machines: 5 fully operative, 1 installation being completed (in and outlets), 3 to be installed • CERN staff manpower for R&D: • June 5th, selection board for 2 technicians to secure in MPGD domain as staffs (5yrs LD posts) • New fellow co-funded CERN + EU MC program: • 1 fellow for 3 years (starting Oct 2012) to: • Support Micromegas R&D and prototyping • Help in & optimize Micromegas production processes in collaboration with industrial partners • Develop specific procedures and advanced techniques for future trends in MPGD technology F. GEM NS2 technique for next large CMS prototypes (Courtesy of Rui de Oliveira) • No need of spacers in active area (adjustable tension) • Reduced frame dead area • Fast assembly time (<2hours, no gluing, no soldering) • Re opening possible (GEM exchange, full detector re-cleaning) • No complicated intermediate tests (problems can always be corrected) F. Conclusions • The work on GEM & Micromegas industrialization is progressing: • GEM -> Newflex -> 30x30 NS2 double mask • -> Techtra -> upgrading facilities (ready end 2012 ?) • -> Techecth -> single mask & feasibility large area ? (MIT R&D collaboration?) • MM -> Eltos & Cirea -> 10x10 resistive bulk • -> Triangle Labs -> invited to contribute • Proposed 3 contact persons for interfacing companies • Machines and manpower in the CERN workshop are getting improved • GEM and Micromegas start converging towards large final sizes and technical solutions • -> intense prototyping activity in the CERN workshop at least until end 2012/beginning 2013 • A few basic observations for a good coordination of the GEM and MM industrialization efforts : • agree on common roadmaps with the support of RD51 • keep close collaboration with the LHC experiments (qualification activity, convergence of objectives) • refine within RD51 • -> enlarged strategy for resource availability • -> share of investments to finance R&D phase with companies All suggestions welcome F. CSC detector Future requirements: CMS muon upgrade • GEM proposed as technology to withstand the high rate requirement for eta>1.6 • Priority for integration ¼ stations 1 to 4 • Installation during LS2 (2018) • TP has been submitted on February 10th • TDR by end 2012 for approval spring 2013 ? Future requirements: LHCb ? • TODAY: • GEMs are installed in M1 muon detector at the innermost region R1 • 12 double stations of triple GEMs • Size 310x430 (active 200x240) • Total GEM foil area ≈ 10m2 • IN FUTURE: • Till now not yet any known plans to instrument more inner regions of muon detectors with GEMs • But if … • Estimated additional total surface ≈ 100m2 ? • For LS2 (2018) ? ???
