  1. Summary HEP 2005 Lisbon Gerhard Raven Eric Laenen Hylke Koers Summary HEP2005, Lisbon

  2. EPS HEP Conference, July 21-27 • Biannual (Aachen 03, Manchester 07) • 3 days parallel, 3 days plenary talks in conference center in Belem, outside Lisbon • many talks, on wide variety of topics, much to digest: Summary HEP2005, Lisbon

  3. This 0.5-summary • covers QCD (p/np), Electroweak, Beyond SM, HI, Hadronic Physics, some particle astrophysics • Is essentially a rapid bus tour past a few highlights, no time to stop long anywhere • First, some future Summary HEP2005, Lisbon

  4. “Future of particle physics” (Joint ECFA-EPS session) • Europe: LHC going well now, linear collider on its mind • Asia (KEK): K2K terminated. Current: KEKB/Belle, ILC work, J-PARC. Future options: J-PARC upgrade, ILC, Super-KEKB (x 30 luminosity) • In US, in a few years, no particle hysics experiment running. Fermilab only HE lab. Ambition: build and host ILC Summary HEP2005, Lisbon

  5. EPP Decadal Survey • Most recent survey of Elementary Particle Physics was completed in 1998 • A new Survey is needed to • Lay out the grand questions that drive the field • Find the opportunities that are ripe for discovery • Identify the tools to achieve the scientific goals • Articulate the connections to other sciences and to society at large • Foster collaborations with scientists around the globe • Recommend a realistic implementation plan Summary HEP2005, Lisbon

  6. EPP2010 Charge • The Committee is charged to • Identify, articulate, and prioritize the scientific questions and opportunities that define elementary particle physics • Recommend a 15-year implementation plan with realistic, ordered priorities to realize these opportunities • Emphasis on evaluating science opportunities • From that, a ranking of the facilities will flow • Linear collider? Neutrino physics? Cosmology? Summary HEP2005, Lisbon

  7. Not your Usual Committee • Non-physicists • Emphasize connections to society at large • Sharpen physics questions • Non-particle-physicists • Help engage other scientific communities • International representation • Place U.S. particle physics in an international context • Overall goal: To present a compelling vision for the field and to create an action plan that will allow it to achieve its goals Summary HEP2005, Lisbon

  8. Electroweak news • Sijbrand plenary speaker! • Less than once: LEP & SLC closed, from Tevatron not much news (yet) • Most important: top mass is coming down (172.7 +- 2.9 GeV) Summary HEP2005, Lisbon

  9. General structure of couplings in the EW interaction (modulo coupling strength and phase): Photon coupling: W coupling: Z couplings: c t u nm nt ne e m t s b d 9 Tests of the Standard Model - EPS 2005 - July 25 - Sijbrand de Jong

  10. aQED Hep-ph/0506323 e e dominates error g 10 Tests of the Standard Model - EPS 2005 - July 25 - Sijbrand de Jong

  11. e e couplings to u and d quarks from H1 combined PDF-EW analysis 11 Tests of the Standard Model - EPS 2005 - July 25 - Sijbrand de Jong

  12. LEP-1 and SLD c and b quarks Final results FB Asymmetries + e b, c Z _ _ - e b, c 12 Tests of the Standard Model - EPS 2005 - July 25 - Sijbrand de Jong

  19. Summary and Conclusion • ElectroWeak Standard Model is holding up to remarkable precision • Important details: • hadronic corrections to aQED • top mass • some outlier results: NuTeV, Al-AFBb, am • Biggest problem: Higgs is elusive but must be in the 100-200 GeV range • Tevatron and LHC have an interesting competition for the Higgs 19 Tests of the Standard Model - EPS 2005 - July 25 - Sijbrand de Jong

  20. QCD News • Experiment: much from HERA, less so from Tevatron • Lattice: a revolution is taking place • pQCD: very interesting new methods (MHV) Summary HEP2005, Lisbon
