How To Physically Identify It • Multistemmed weed • Fernlike leaves • Small white flowers • Stems have purple spots • Can grow 10 feet tall • Hollow except for the nodes • Flowerheads on plant are large
Why It’s Dangerous • Hemlock leaves, stems, and seeds have potent neurotoxins. This affects the nervous system. • 4-5 lbs is lethal dose to horses • All parts of plant are poisonous • Roots are more toxic than the leaves and stem
Symptoms • Signs appear within an hour of consumption • Nervousness, incoordination, possibility of colic are symptoms of hemlock poisoning • Dialated pupils, weakness, staggering gait, all signs of poisoning
Where It Grows • North America • Along roadsides • In areas that aren’t taken care of • Grows in waste areas, especcially in Ohio
Treatment • There is no treatment for hemlock if eaten in large doses • However, small amounts like a nibble, and the animal may have a chance living
