Title Of Lesson “ Wellness ” Theme- How High Quality Literature connects to wellness
To Be A Kid By: Maya Ajmera and John D. Ivanko In the book To Be A Kid the idea that children from all around the world and diverse cultures, remain connected is conveyed by their creative play, and love for family and friends.
Objective The students will learn how to connect literature to physical being and wellness, through description, putting together there plate, and connections made to story.
Questions Before Lesson What is your favorite food ? What are some examples of healthy foods? What does wellness mean to you?
Materials Needed Print out of foods, vegetables, other components of a healthy diet. Paper plates Glue/ Tape Pencils, Color pencils etc.
Introduction Good morning boys and girls today we will be learning about how things you learn in school, such as literature can be connected to things like wellness and being healthy. Today we will divide your favorite meals into five different nutritional groups Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Protein and Dairy Example plate
Nutritional Groups • Fruits-apples, bananas, cherries, grapes, strawberries • Vegetables- carrots, broccoli, green beans, corn, tomatoes • Grains- bread, rice, oatmeal, whole-wheat flour, whole cornmeal • Protein- meats, seafood, nuts and seeds, eggs, beans • Dairy- milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, pudding
Steps Pass out cut outs of foods, vegetables, other nutritional components. Pass out two (2) paper plates for each student (one separate plate for dairy products) Pass out materials such as glue sticks, tape, writing utensils, crayons.
Questions After Lesson • Under what category does your favorite food fall under? • What is wellness? • What portion of your plate should contain more, vegetables or protein ?
