The Iconic Icelandic Sweater: Past and Present Ericka Moore Period 2A
5 facts • The Icelandic name for the circular yoke sweater is "lopapeysa.“ • lopi is the type of yarn used in the making of the sweater. And peysa, means sweater • the sweater is practically a uniform In Reykjavik • This sweater is iconic in Iceland • In the handknitting association of Iceland, the sweaters were stacked to the ceiling in all different colors and sizes.
5 more facts • The yarn from Icelandic sheep is unique because the breed has been isolated from other breeds of centuries • All the years of exposure to the sub-arctic climate has made the wool with two fibers • One of the two fibers are warm and soft, (used on the inside of sweater) while the other is waterproof (used on the outside of sweater) • The Icelandic sweater dates back to the 1950’s • In the 60’s and 70’s, the sweater became very popular and made a lasting impression on Icelandic imagery.
Personal reflection I think, for one, this sweater is really ugly, but its really useful to the Icelanders, because it is very warm, and waterproof. And they need a new design…. O.o
