  1. ET relevant European satellites Massimo Menenti Delft University of Technology NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  2. European Satellites • MSG: SEVIRI • MTG: Full Disk High Spectral-resolution Imagery (FDHSI) 25 spectral channels • ATSR-1, ATSR-2, AATSR • Sentinel 3 SLSTR • Sentinel 2 • SMOS NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  3. Land Surface Analysis Satellite Applications Facility (LSA SAF) http://landsaf.meteo.pt/ • Operational data products: • Land Surface Temperature (15 mins) • Evapotranspiration (30 mins) • Daily Evapotranspiration Pre-operational data products • Surface Albedo Internal data products • Bi-Directional Reflectance Factor • Land Surface Emissivity NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  4. ET Product Description The methodology followed here is to force a Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere-Transfer (SVAT) scheme with relevant data (short and long-wave fluxes (DSSF, DSLF), albedo (AL) and in next versions LAI, FVC, SC) derived from MSG and auxiliary data (air temperature and humidity, wind speed, atmospheric pressure...) from other sources, mainly ECMWF. . NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  5. LST Product Description Theoretically, LST values can be determined 96 times per day from MSG but in practice less observations are available due to cloud cover. The Generalised Split-Window (GSW) algorithm (Wan and Dozier, 1996) was chosen to retrieve LST. It requires emissivity as input data. The retrieval of EM is based on the Vegetation Cover Method, which assumes component emissivities. NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  6. nadir view forward view cool vegetation warm soil Thermal heterogeneity of vegetation canopies and heat transfer Mixtures of foliage and soil = thermally heterogeneous Radiometric temperature depends on view direction Exitances of mixture elements can be added together Temperature Directional Distribution (TDD) Measurements at two very different view angles are needed NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  7. AATSR (SLSTR) NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  8. ATSR: the Along Track Scanning Radiometers ERS-1 was launched in July 1991 and ATSR-1 operated until June 1996; ATSR-2 went into operation in 1995 on ERS 2 AATSR is on ENVISAT launched March 1st 2002. Dual view: 00 and 550 ATSR –1: 1.6um; 3.7um, 11um, and 12um ATSR – 2: 0.555, 0.659, 0.865,1.61 3.7, 10.8, and 12 AATSR = ATSR - 2 NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  9. (TOA) data : Tb (),  () Atmospheric correction for VIS/NIR/SWIR channels Atmospheric correction for TIR channels Fractional vegetation cover Fc () (BOA) Surface brightness temperature Inversion model Component temperatures Tf, Ts Retrieval of soil and foliage temperatures Requirements: IPCC – GEOSS, 2011 (Menenti et al., 2001; Li et al., 2001) NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  10. Soil and foliage temperatures Clear separation between soil and foliage component temperature in different seasons. (Jia et al., 2003) NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  11. Sentinel 3: launch 2013 Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  12. SLSTR - II NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  13. Sentinel 2: launch 2013 NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  14. Sentinel 2 spatial – temporal resolution NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.

  15. Comments • MSG ET data product relies on LSM rather observations of state (LST or soil moisture) • ECMWF land cover is frozen (Vegetation Functional Types with associated parameters) • 20 years of bi-angular TIR measurements available • SLSTR is an operational long term program • Thermal band on Sentinel 2 continuity? NASA - USDA Workshop Evapotranspiration Silver Spring Md.
