Acts I, II and III Notes Make sure you have the correct date (May 31, 2011) Document Specifications • Times New Roman Font Sz 12 • Document Margins: 1 inch all sides • Proper heading at Top Left Corner and Single Spaced • Save as, “O_Acts1-3_Notes
Act I is in cahoots with Roderigo who is giving him money Iago: (a powerful politician) is upset with his main man, Othello, for eloping with his daughter, Desdemona Brabantio: is an important army general who is not afraid of Brabantio (his boss and his father in law) Othello: Othello’s lieutenant is flirtatious and easy prey for Iago Cassio:
Act I Is not sympathetic towards Brabantio and stands behind his general, Othello The Duke: Tells the story of how he and Desdemona fell in love (sans magic and witchcraft) Othello: The Duke needs Othello on guard and ready for the oncoming Turkish fleet War: Othello, his ensign and their ladies are all to go to Cyprus to prepare The Situation:
Act II The Turkish fleet is destroyed by a storm and is no longer a threat Turks: Gets to Cyprus first and greets the rest of the group Cassio: Capitalizes on Desdemona’s kindness and plants a seed of doubt about Cassio and Desdemona in Othello’s head Iago: Iago professes that he loves Desdemona; also that the thought of Othello with his wife plagues his thoughts. This suggests that he wants to defile Desdemona either by sleeping with her or other means. Gross. Wife For Wife:
Act II Declares a victory and orders a party Othello: Othello leaves Cassio in charge and tells him to restrain himself (don’t drink too much!). Cassio does not follow orders. The Party: Iago sends Roderigo after a drunk Cassio (he’s a fighter). They come running back into the scene with Cassio chasing Roderigo. The Fight: Montano (Governor of Cyprus) tries to stop the fight and Cassio attacks him. Montano: Othello wants to hear the story; Iago ‘gives in’ and retells the story with Cassio in the worst possible light. Resolution:
Act II Drops Cassio from his position Othello: Is beyond distraught by losing his position. Iago tells Cassio that he should talk to Desdemona and convince her to convince Othello to get his job back Cassio: Wants to go back to Venice; Iago convinces him not to. Roderigo: Iago is going to ask his wife (Emilia) to talk to Desdemona about getting Cassio his job back and make sure Othello sees Cassio talk to Desdemona The next step:
