Modern Usage • In today’s culture the word narcissism is linked to Narcissus. The word is about obsessive focus on oneself, or basically another form of self-absorption.
Examples • 1) Jim was being narcissistic when we saw him kissing a photo of himself. 2) Models are so narcissistic, but at least they have a reason unlike Jim. 3) Jim’s girlfriend is the opposite of narcissistic, assuming from how she always ware a bag over her head
History • Nemesis was the Greek goddess of vengeance and retribution. She punished people for wrongdoing, especially for excessive pride.
Modern Usage • A person’s “nemesis” is that which causes his or her downfall, or the term can refer to the downfall itself
Examples • 1) The cyclist considered that particular stretch of mountain to be his nemesis, costing him a racing victory year after year. • 2) An athlete’s greatest nemesis while training for a marathon is breaking his legs before the marathon. • 3) One of man’s nemesis is being stranded in the desert with no food, water, and shelter to survive.
History • Icarus and his father, Daedalus, escaped from the island of Crete. The wings constructed by Daedalus, which were held together by wax. Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun, Icarus didn’t listen to the warning and the wax melted, and he fell to his death in the Aegean sea.
Present day meaning/example • Present day meaning=listen to your elders. • 1) When I told my roommate I thought I could attend the all night party and still de well on my final exams. The next day he said, “I have just one word for you-Icarus.”
Examples • 2) In Mirrors Edge, the story of Icarus is recalled by Merc when Faith first finds evidence of the project Icarus. • 3) In the Kid Icarus games, the main character is an angel who cannot fly. In Kid Icarus: Uprising, his goddess grants him the power of flight, but warns that if he flies for too log, his wings will burn up.
