INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE (IBD) FACTS: Canada has among the highest frequency of people with Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC) in the world, in fact over 200,000 Canadian men, women and children suffer from IBD: IBD Overview Intro to CCFC IBD Research • Every year, over 9,200 Canadians, including children, are diagnosed with IBD. • Onset rates differ across the lifespan: • A clear, single peak in the twenties and then declining for CD. • After a rise in the twenties, a steady rate throughout adulthood for UC. • Approximately 5,000 children are suffering from IBD. • CD is associated with a 47% increased risk of premature death. The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) is a not-for-profit medical research foundation dedicated to finding the cure for IBD. We are a grassroots Foundation started in 1974 by a small group of parents of children with IBD. CCFC has more then 65,000 supporters and includes members in approximately 80 local volunteer groups across Canada, supported by regionally based staff. CCFC is Canada’s major funder of IBD research. To date, CCFC has invested over $61 million in major medical research projects and is one of the world’s leading sources of non-governmental funding of IBD research. Education is a very important part of our mandate. We provide information to patients, their families, health professionals and the public through our education brochures, speakers’ events and our member publications The Journal and GUT Reaction. Economic Burden of Illness In November 2008 CCFC launched “The Burden of IBD in Canada” report which is crucial in outlining the social costs of IBD in more detail than is currently available. • BC has the lowest rate – 331 per 100,000 • NS has the highest rate – 580 per 100,000 • 30% more females than males • Higher rates in urban vs. rural areas GEM Project Funded by CCFC, The Michael J. Howorth Genetic, Environmental and Microbial (GEM) Project is a multi-centre $5.5 million Canadian study investigating the interaction of genetics, environmental and microbial factors on IBD. (www.gemproject.ca) • This is a unique Canadian research study that will for the first time prospectively (looking forward) study a select group of people who are healthy siblings and offspring of individuals diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. Volunteer Recruitment Volunteers are the heart and soul of the CCFC. Join our team of volunteers who coordinate events and raise funds for inflammatory bowel disease research. M&M Meat Shops Charity BBQ Day Each year in May, thousands of volunteers and supporters come out to over 460 locations across the country and have a great time serving up and eating at the largest nation-wide BBQ in Canada. Charity BBQ Day is CCFC’s largest fundraising event by a single supporter. Since 1989, the partnership between M&M Meat Shops and CCFC has continued to grow, becoming our best corporate partner and a Platinum Sponsor of CCFC. Heel ‘n’ Wheel-a-Thon CCFC’s largest and most energetic annual fundraising event which takes place during the month of June. In 2009, more than 6,000 participants cycle, stroll, run or roll in over 80 communities across Canada. NOVEMBER: A Month to “Get Gutsy” • The PR program for Awareness Month included the following elements: • Dignitary Outreach National Media Relations • Gutsiest Canadian Contest Regional Spokesperson Tour • Objectives: Educate Canadians, raise CCFC’s profile and increase fundraising IBD Overview In 2006, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, formally recognized November as Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Month. Patient Forums / Education Symposiums Helps to educate and create awareness among Canadians affected by IBD, their families, friends and the general public. Crohn’s and Colitis Patient Declaration • In late April 2009, CCFC launched the Patient Declaration website: • isupportibd.ca. • CCFC’s objectives for the Declaration is to help improve the quality of life of people living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). • The Crohn’s and Colitis Declaration is a call to action for Canadians to recognize the needs of people with IBD, including: IBD Overview Intro to CCFC IBD Research Awareness and Events • Greater awareness and education • Timely and equal access to therapies, • Access to bathroom facilities, and • Support for the further funding of research. • RESULTS TO DATE: • Traditional media = over 2 million impressions • Coverage including web stories = over 83 million impressions • Over 6,100 signatures Opportunities
