REPORTED SPEECH REPORTED STATEMENTS
HOW IT WORKS? • We use a “reporting verb“ like say or tell. If this verb is in present tense we just put “she says“ and then the sentence: DIRECT SPEECH “I like chocolate.“ REPORTED SPEECH Shesaysshelikeschocolate. • We don´t change the tense but we need to change the person from I to she.
If the reporting verb is in the past tense, the we usually change the tenses in the reported speech. DIRECT SPEECH “I likechocolate.“ REPORTED SPEECH Shesaidshelikedchocolate.
Don´t forget: • To report a statement we use reporting verbs: • Say + something: John said he wanted to come. • Tell + someone + something: John told me he wanted to come. • Other reporting verbs: reply, explain, promise, claim, announce, declare.
