  2. What is meant by Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS)? Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is NOT a curriculum, intervention, or practice, but IS a decision making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for all students.

Supporting Social Competence & Academic Achievement Elements of SWPBIS OUTCOMES Not new…its based on long history of behavioral practices & effective instructional design & strategies Not limited to any particular group of students…it’s for all students Not specific practice or curriculum…it’s a general approach to preventing problem behavior Supporting Decision Making Supporting Staff Behavior DATA SYSTEMS PRACTICES Supporting Student Behavior

What is School-wide PBIS (SW-PBIS)? • Evidence-based approach for establishing a positive social culture in schools that involves systemic and individualized behavior support strategies for achieving social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior with all students. • Evidence-based features include: • Prevention • Define and teach positive social expectations • Acknowledge positive behavior • Arrange consistent consequences for problem behavior • On-going collection and use of data for decision-making • Continuum of intensive, individual interventions • Administrative leadership—Team-based implementation

  6. Values of PBIS & Mission for School Teams Improving school/student performance Tying all efforts to the benefit of students Never changing things that are working Always making the smallest change that will have the biggest impact on students/school

Team Process • PBIS is active, alive -- not static • It’s not something we’ve done – it’s something we’re doing • Requires regular team meetings with a team that represents ALL school staff • Team keeps PBIS alive through ongoing planning, support, and decision making to address needs as they arise • Looking at data & maintaining & developing programs to meet needs

SCCOE Training Sequence Training is provided over a three-year period • professional development sessions • Site Team (4 x per year) • Coaches Training (8 x first year, 5 x second/third year) • District Leadership Action Planning (1 x per year) • design and planning time • on-site technical assistance
