Outline • Introduction • Individual Processor Description • Comparison Between Processors • Conclusion
Introduction • Our objective in this presentation is to inform the characteristics of the processors used for workstations by different companies and compare each one of them.
Intel Xeon • 2.4-3GHz • L2 1MB • HT Extended • Memory 64 Technology • Demand Based Switching with Enhanced Intel Speed Step • Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSE3) • 124W • $900.00
Intel Itanium 2 • 1.3-1.5 GHz • L2 256KB, L3 6MB • Based on EPIC architecture • Enhanced Machine Check architecture (MCA) • Operating system support HP-UX, Linux • 130W • $1,300.00
Apple Power PC G5 • 1.25GHz • L1 96KB L2 512KB • 64 Bit Frontside bus up to 1.25GHz • Dual independent frontside buses in dual processor systems • Two floating-point units for high-speed double-precision calculations • 24.5W • $2,200.00
AMD Opteron • 1.4-2.4GHz • L1 128KB L2 1MB • AMD64 technology instruction set extensions • 64-bit integer registers • Eight new 64-bit integer registers • Eight new 128-bit SSE/SSE2 registers • 55W~30W • $800.00
Ultra SPARC IIi • 500MHz • L1 32KB L2 512KB • VIS Instruction Set • 64-bit SPARC V9 • CMOS 0.18 micron process • 6 layer AL metal • 13W • $1,400.00
Ultra SPARC III • 1.0-1.2GHz • L1 100KB L2 8MB (ext) • 64-Bit SPARC architecture • VIS Instruction Set • 4-way superscalar • 14-stage non-stable pipeline • CMOS .13 micron process • 1368 pin flip-chip ceramic Land Grid Array (LGA) • 53W • $6,500.00
Conclusion • Based on the specifications found for each processor, we conclude that the most convenient one for power applications is the Power PC G5.
