Each year between 75% and 80% of our Year 11 students stay on to the 6th form • Currently we have 137 students in Year 13, 143 students in Year 12 -180 students in all • Students are allocated to one of 7 houses and 14 registrations groups where they are looked after by a 6th form tutor
How do our students do? 2011 - 231 Points per entry
Last year students in Year 13 were awarded 68 A* grades across 13 subjects at A Level • 100 students moved directly onto a university courses – many to Russell group and other competitive universities • 10 students had a gap year and have secured university places this year • 7 students successfully gained places at Oxford or Cambridge university
External Applicants • We do not have a maximum number of external applicants we will accept • We will consider external applicants who are predicted the entrance requirements and who are applying for subjects in which we have spaces • We follow County guidelines in the case of oversubscription • In the current Year 12 we have 22 students who took their GCSE exams elsewhere
Comfortable seating and workspace for about 100 students • Silent study room • 22 Networked computers in Study Area and an additional 30 computers in classrooms • WIFI • Lockers • Periodicals, Prospectuses, Quality Newspapers, Novels, Popular Science and other Non-Fiction books, and post-19 Opportunities • Designated 6th form eating area
Year 12 students are required to be in school everyday • Year 13 students may negotiate periods of home study once they have completed their UCAS applications • 6th form students are expected to act as role models for the rest of the school and as such are given both freedom and responsibility
The Sixth Form dress code is essentially smart office wear which must be adhered to equally by both boys and girls. Girls • Shirt or top without logos • Suit – i.e. jacket with matching tailored skirt or full length tailored trousers, not culottes or Capri pants • No excessively short skirts, no shorts or leggings • Smart shoes - no excessively high heels Boys • Shirt with tie • Suit - Navy, grey or black tailored jacket and trousers • Smart shoes All Sixth Formers must wear a jacket when walking around school, as well as for assemblies and other formal occasions.
Students study four subjects at AS level in Year 12, usually dropping to three A2 levels in Year 13. • Students are expected to achieve B grades at GCSE in subjects which they wish to study in the sixth form, or in relevant subjects where specified. • As a part of the Harpenden Consortium we are able to offer a wide range of subjects
Students are supported in their achievement through a rigorous programme of target setting and academic mentoring • Reporting to parents twice a year – aspirational targets set early in October and reviewed in March • All students are offered two formal academic mentoring appointments with a member of the 6th form team • Student achievement is tracked and supported throughout the year
Personal Statement, Career Plans and Extra- Curricular Offer • Students must attach a Personal Statement to their 6th form application • Students should explain why they wish to study each subject they select and include any future career plans. • Students also need to explain what they could offer to the wider school community such as helping with paired reading, running a club or peer mentoring.
Students should try to maximise grades at A level by choosing the subjects at which they excel. Use Mock results as a guide • Some universities do express a preference for ‘traditional’ subjects: English Lit, Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics, History, Geography, MFL. However what they mean by this is that they like to see 2 traditional subjects – they are perfectly happy with a 3rd that is less traditional • They also do not prefer traditional subjects to the point of accepting lower grades in these • Some degrees require particular subjects: • Medicine requires Chemistry.. • Engineering requires Maths • Economics at many universities requires maths • Computing is being offered for the first time this year – this is a Maths based A Level and requires excellent Maths skills – for those considering Computer Science or Engineering at university • Applied Science is a good option for those considering a career in physiotherapy/ nursing/ sports science etc but who have not taken triple science at GCSE • Photography is an Art based portfolio subject – do not choose this if you have struggled with deadlines etc in Arts based subjects at GCSE • Sports and PE has a high level of science content and a relatively small performance element – take this into consideration when choosing • Be aware of how the subjects you choose are examined – choosing 3 or 4 portfolio subjects requires excellent time-management skills Things to consider
Once applications are received • The sixth form timetable is built around choices students have made – this allows us to facilitate the majority of students’ choices. • However, we work on a ‘best fit’ model so we are unlikely to be able to accommodate all choices. In the case of a clash we may be able to offer the subject at one of our consortium schools or you may need to select an alternative subject • All internal applicants are invited to a meeting to discuss choices • If places are available, external applicants who meet our entrance requirements, are considered and may be invited to a meeting • Letters of offer are sent out after all meetings have taken place

Application forms should be returned as soon as possible and no later than Friday, 10th February 2012
