Undocumented Students Delayed Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Temporary permission to remain in the U.S. Work permitted Drivers licenses Social Security Number
Undocumented Students Undocumented students cannot complete the FAFSA even if DACA eligible Not eligible for federal or state financial aid ARE eligible for many private sources of aid – search Can apply for private loans with a credit-worthy co-signer
Undocumented Students Some public schools charge Undocumented Students resident tuition Some schools provide significant institutional assistance Some schools charge non-resident tuition Some public schools do not allow Undocumented Students to apply
Undocumented Parents If the student is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident but the parent is Undocumented: The student is fully eligible for financial aid!!!
Undocumented Parents Student should complete the FAFSA exactly the same as all students and when asked for the parents’ Social Security Number they put: 000-00-0000 (all zeroes)
Undocumented Students • The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act • DREAM Act • The DREAM Act has not yet passed; stay tuned
Foster Youth • The Education Training Voucher (ETV) is not counted as untaxed income on the FAFSA • ETV is not counted as estimated financial aid in the award • There are schools in Michigan that provide tuition assistance for foster care alums, as well as personal and academic support • Be sure they apply for TIP!!!!!
Unaccompanied Homeless Youth - UHY • Know who your district’s McKinney-Vento Homeless Liaison is • Be sure the student has documentation of the status • Help to provide the documentation to the college • A call to the financial aid office is a good idea • UHY status has to be determined each year • Students who meet the UHY definition ARE independent!!! • Help the student identify the Single Point of Contact (SPOC)
