Sierra Nevada is a fundamental part of our collective natural heritage. In 1986 it was included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve and three years later, in 1989 it was declared a Natural Park and finally in 1999 the declaration of the Sierra Nevada National Park was reached and its inclusion In the Network of National Parks, since 2002 is part of the Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA). Las Acequias Since ancient times, the most effective system to regulate the waters of melting was the derivation by irrigation ditches of the water of the rivers to the zones of culture. Another ancestral and curious system of regulation of the waters of melting are the acequias of careo, that is not known if they are of Roman origin or Hispanic-Muslim. By means of these ditches, the water was taken to specific areas, where the water slowly filtered, soaking the slopes, or emerging in springs, in such a way as to avoid the loss of surface water by evaporation, supplying the areas Low in the driest season, through irrigation ditches. In the past they were also used to irrigate crops of high altitude (potatoes, rye) and to grow pastures for cattle, perhaps of the latter comes its name, since it is synonymous with pasture, pacer. The ditches have always associated a path for acequiero, so that the path and monitor its proper functioning.
FLORA Sierra Nevada has 2,100 vascular plants cataloged, of which 80 are exclusive of this territory, are the endemismos. FAUNA Unlike the plant world, animal species have the ability to move and avoid places that are favorable to their vital development. However, in Sierra nevada we exclude birds and some mammals, the rest of the fauna can not exert important movements to safeguard against inclement weather.
