Technology and Program Growth My Department’s Vision of Technology
Technology and Program Growth • Established The Gerontology Program Web Site • Face-to-face Continuing Educational Units (CEU) main portal for new students and classes grew. • Suddenly, after several semesters of growth, classes went from 80 or more on a Saturday to less than 40 • Competition in the surrounding area for CEU’s
Technology and Program Growth • Decided to try putting a full-semester class on line to meet all required CEU’s for R.N’s. • Class filled before early enrollment ended • Added 4 more sections and they filled • Added Sociology of Aging – it filled
Technology and Program Growth • Noticed a new portal for students • Traditional Gero. student (at ARC) • Has been a 42-year-old female with 2.5 kids. • Now, many more 18, 19 and 20 year-old students. Enrollments Increased
Technology and Program Growth • 75 % or our older students had not been exposed to the web and web-based coursework • Kept core classes face-to- face • Made one core class a hybrid Trouble now keep on campus classes full
Technology and Program Growth Activity Coordinator Certificate • Certificate Program 6.5 units- Meets State of California, Title 22 requirements for certificate for Activity Coordinator • Demand is high on campus, people are driving 100+ miles to attend. • With the help of a grant, program goes on line • State pulls the plug • No regulations written • Still in limbo- demand is still high
Technology and Program Growth Web site attracts one to two inquires per week • Always send them to the Program Coordinator for a personal counseling session List serve connects the Gerontology Community to each other NOTE: Join in on the ARC Gerontology list serve and receive email messages to and from the gerontology community. http://iserver.losrios.edu/cgi-bin/mailserv-test.cgi?list=geroboardTo send emails to the list geroboard@lists.losrios.edu

Technology and Program Growth • In the beginning it was just me, an Idiot Book, and lots of desire • On line readiness class- • recommend Cerro Coso Community College http://cconline.cerrocoso.edu/faccert/default.htm • First Sties were Built in FrontPage • Now we have Bb • Had to challenge old thinking on campus • Face-to face vs. on line orientations • Book Store Orders • Who can teach on line?
Future Goals • Put the validation class on line • Problems with institutional thinking • Use full video’s on line • Pod Casting • Instead of reading the new content on a computer screen, you listen to the new content on an iPod or iPod-like device
Marketing • CEU and Vocational Certificates • Entry point • Bulk mailings • Conferences and workshops • Public presentations • Campus Presentations • Internships • Media
