  2. Main Goal: • To create disability-friendly, senior-friendly, more universally designed communities that are better for all citizens and visitors • Created by the North, for the North

Principles • Are locally controlled and include Project Liaison Partners • Use a universal design approach • Facilitate and support the planning of accessibility and inclusion in information/communication, transportation, buildings, spaces, housing, leisure, cultural, social and spiritual activities • Brings together code officials, urban/social planners, politicians, disability and seniors groups, tourism and hospitality industry, realtors, health professionals, developers, builders, business and more • Includes dignity, respect, inclusion in civic life and intergenerational approaches

Statistics • 34/41 ( over 80%) communities provided letters of support • 39/41 communities expressed interest • 20/41 communities have provided financial support • 39  NCLGA Liaisons • 23 Community Liaisons • 6 Paid Coordinators • 9/41  have MUP Grants from 2010 Legacies Now • 20 received MUTN Implementation Grants

  5. Achievements Already! Several have established new committees with people who had not been brought together before: • Burns Lake/Bulkley-Nechako RD: waterfront development, elevator in library, businesses, tourism • Cariboo Regional District: trails, outdoor recreation facilities, tourism sites, museum • Dawson Creek: hotels, official community plan, businesses • Fort St. John: sidewalks, parking, cultural centre, building specifications Fort Nelson: housing, businesses, tourism centre, OCP • 100 Mile House: on-line community survey, transportation, accessible trail around marsh, incentives for businesses

More Successes… • Hudsons Hope: accessible parking enforcement, businesses, access to basement of seniors centre, community hall, library, signage, housing, post office, municipal office, seniors housing • McBride: businesses, tourism centre, transportation • Kitimat: businesses, tourism centre, housing, seniors housing, Community Survey • Prince George: trails, bus stops, housing, snow clearing, formation of scooter/power wheelchair club, increased number of Dart buses

  7. More Successes • Prince Rupert: businesses, waterfront development, tourism, installed curb cuts by cruise ship terminal, audible signals • Pouce Coupe: planning to include MUTN principles in their Official Community Plan • Quesnel: thorough community assessment, transportation, recreation centre, housing policies, changes to Spirit Square, accessible parking specifications, power doors at curling rink, recreation trails, developed Strategic Plan, Accessible Golf Tournament • Smithers: sidewalks, transportation, businesses, housing, Design Charette

More Successes • Telkwa: transportation, Visitable housing, Day care centre, Seniors Centre, Community Centre • Terrace: businesses, sidewalks, trails, municipal building now installing elevator, Tim Horton’s installed a power door, positive media events, increased awareness by high school students • Taylor: Parking, golf course club house, municipal office, library • Tumbler Ridge: Housing, Elevator in Community Centre • Williams Lake: held public forums, developed strategic plan, audible signals, curb cut program, regional airport: changing entrance, playground initiative, airport entrance

  10. More Achievements! • 20 Communities received the first MUTN Implementation Awards in May 2008 • There have been over nearly 30 media reports on the project
