The difference Vision Criteria - that allows for imagination Detailed
The Incredibles Cohesive and imaginative
What vs. How to do it Make fries that are crispy and flavorful vs. Go to the refrigerator, get the fries, and then fry them
Why micromanagement occurs • Personal style – how they react and treat all friends, family, workers • A learned behavior - remnants of an autocratic work environment • Situational– “troubled” project, high profile project, and some people (sigh) need to be micromanaged
Conflict • Hard workers - both the micromanager and the employees care and work hard = frustration. • Asymmetric views on contribution. Unable to leverage skillsets. Small use of potential. • Controlling vs. other ways of mitigating risk. They create what they believe. Rigid vs. adaptable. • Interesting unawareness about their effect on morale. Perhaps attribute to employee deficiency and the micromanager as the lone worker.
Fundamentally all micromanagement is based on a lack of trust (e.g. doubtful about the ability to make the right decision, to be competent, to be able to contribute, to do something without errors).
How do you handle Fear & Trust Risk & Control Negative outcomes & Contribution
For manual work, efficiency was enough. For knowledge work, effectiveness is more important than efficiency. Set the right priorities Build on strengths Focus on contributions and results
Encourage productive conflict Make new mistakes (don’t keep making the same ones) Make lots of little mistakes (don’t make the big ones)
In reality • Sometimes micromanagement can’t be managed • See the micromanager as - unable to deal with stress and uncertainty • Learn from this experience - anticipate and create better somewhere else • Gain confidence and accomplishment from other sources • If you can, get A New Job (ANJ)
Meanwhile See if the door is closed Install another perspective Learn acting. Hollywood.
