Analysis - Winston wakes up from bad dream about sister and mother - tells Julie about it - starts talking about Party's consequences for finding out about their relationship - Winston, speaker of quote, claims that ratting each other out does not equal betrayal -not loving each other is betrayal -nearly impossible to hide from thought police - if love stays true (even if kept apart by party), love remains strong - Feelings > words (words are controlled by Party) - feelings say more than words

10. “Listen. The more men you’ve had, the more I love you. Do you understand that? ...I hate purity, I hate goodness! I don’t want any virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones.” (112)

11. Analysis This quotation was said by Winston right after Julia tells Winston that she has slept with many different men from the Party a number of times. Winston finds this trait about her attractive He is attracted to Julia because she is different from all the other people in the society; she hates the Party as much as he does. Although sexual love between Party members is strictly forbidden and is considered betrayal to the party, they believe that “real betrayal” is to stop loving each other.

12. “During the month that he had known her the nature of his desire for her had changed. At the beginning there had been little true sensuality in it. Their first love-making had been simply an act of the will. But after the second time it was different. The smell of her hair, the taste of her mouth, the feeling of her skin seemed to have got inside him, or into the air all round him. She had become a physical necessity, something that he not only wanted but felt that he had a right to.” (124)

13. Analysis This quotation reflects Winston’s thoughts and desires towards his relationship between him and Julia When Julia said she could not meet up with him. The love within their relationship becomes an obsession to Winston. Being away from her makes him feel like she’s cheating on him. Winston think of Julia as a “physical necessity, something that he not only wanted but felt that he had a right to” and this make Winston sound dispirit.

14. You are prepared to commit suicide, if and when we order you to do so?’ ’Yes.’ ’You are prepared, the two of you, to separate and never see one another again?’ ’No!’ broke in Julia. It appeared to Winston that a long time passed before he answered. For a moment he seemed even to have been deprived of the power of speech. His tongue worked soundlessly, forming the opening syllables first of one word, then of the other, over and over again. Until he had said it, he did not know which word he was going to say. ’No,’ he said finally.

15. Analysis Agreed to committing suicide. Disagreed to separating from Julia. They care for each other more than their own lives or the lives of others.

She had become a physical necessity, something that he not only wanted but felt that he had a right to. When she said that she could not come, he had the feeling that she was cheating him. But just at this moment the crowd pressed them together and their hands accidentally met. She gave the tips of his fingers a quick squeeze that seemed to invite not desire but affection. It struck him that when one lived with a woman this particular disappointment must be a normal, recurring event; and a deep tenderness, such as he had not felt for her before, suddenly took hold of him. He wished that they were a married couple of ten years’ standing. He wished that he were walking through the streets with her just as they were doing now but openly and without fear, talking of trivialities and buying odds and ends for the household. He wished above all that they had some place where they could be alone together without feeling the obligation to make love every time they met.” (147)
