Sustaining SPF Infrastructure and Capacity Outcomes During an Economic Downturn March 16, 2011 Southeast Regional Networking Webinar 2 p.m.–4 p.m. Eastern Time
Welcome! • We will get started in a few minutes. • Please introduce yourself and anyone with you by typing in your name and location into the chat box. • If you did not preregister, please include your email address too. • Thanks!
Objectives • Facilitate a peer to peer exchange on: • Concerns about sustaining infrastructure and capacities gained through the SPF • Strategies to sustain infrastructure and capacities gained through the SPF
Common Concerns and Questions • How do we “define” sustaining infrastructure and capacities developed under the SPF SIG? • How has capacity been maintained without funding allocations? • Were any services or funding streams realigned after SPF SIG? • How have States integrated the SPF process into the Block Grant?
What to Sustain? SPF-Informed Infrastructure • Committees/subcommittees/workgroups • State-level partnerships • Sub-state infrastructure that helps accomplish State substance abuse prevention goals
What to Sustain? SPF-Related Outcomes • Change in State priority problems and/or intervening variables/risk or protective factors • Increased capacity to implement the SPF within the SSA or State partners
Assure Effectiveness & Build Ownership Prevention strategies are more likely to be sustained when . . . • Effectiveness in achieving desired outcomes among the target population can be demonstrated through evaluation • Benefits to key stakeholders and the broader community can be demonstrated
Strategic Decisions • Process and outcome data tells the story looking backward • What are the goals looking forward? • How do you want to build on SPF outcomes or infrastructure to move the State to the next level? • How would a SPF-informed system look? • In tough economic times, what are the things you can’t afford to stop doing?
Assets-Based Determinations • What are the components of a SPF-informed system that you do well? • Who is able to do them? • How can you galvanize these assets? • How can you showcase them to high-level State leaders to get their buy-in?
Intersection of State and Community • Interdependent • Prevention efforts/interventions implemented at the community level, based upon • State-identified priorities, approaches and interventions • Effective State sustainability planning should align and coordinate State and community efforts
Develop and Nurture Positive Relationships Key stakeholders must see themselves as stewards of the community’s health andwell-being whose success depends on their collective effectiveness. This collective responsibility requires trusting relationships among all the stakeholders and a willingness to work strategically together.
