The man and the woman behind Hearst Castle William Randolph Hearst • Born April 29, 1863 in San Francisco, CA • Newspaper magnate; at his peak owned almost 30 newspapers along with magazines, radio broadcasting companies and movie production companies • Had an intense, almost insatiable desire to build his ultimate dream home Julia Morgan • Born January 20,1872 in San Francisco, CA • Second cousin to Pierre Le Brun • The first woman admitted to the famed Ecole des Beaux Arts school in Paris • Renowned for her ability to blend multiple projects into a seamless whole
La Cuesta Encantada – The Enchanted Hill • 240,000 acre spread • A continuing project that spanned 28 years • Total cost of project is estimated just under $10mm • 4 “houses” on the hill • 2 pools • Private zoo • Built as a private residence for the Hearst family, as well as to entertain and impress guests, as well as house Hearst’s burgeoning art collection

Loosely styled after a church at Ronda, in southern Spain • Approximately 45,000 sq. ft. • 115 total rooms The towers and main entrance feature actual architectural fragments from late Spanish Gothic cathedrals
The Pools Roman Pool • Styled after the ancient Roman Baths of Caracalla • Took seven years to build • The entire pool, room and ceiling are covered in 1” square tiles called “Smalti” Neptune Pool • Two pools were built before ending with this final incarnation • Took 12 years to build • Final dimensions: • 104’x58’ (95’ wide at alcove) • 3-1/2’ – 10’ deep • 345,000 gallons
The Zoo • The largest private zoo in the world • The animal collection constantly changed with Hearst’s tastes, desires and interests • A veterinarian was kept on full-time staff • Animals kept in specialized pens, or allowed to “freerange”
“Art-chitecture” 15th century Spanish Gothic cathedral ceiling Ancient Egyptian statues; possibly from 2nd century BC Assembly room, in Casa Grande. Filled with antique furnishings, art and architecture
Location, location, location • Located in San Simeon, right in California’s central coast • A 5+ mile road winds up over 1600’ high to the Castle site • From the top of the hill, Hearst could look out over his 240,000+ acre ranch
