1. Sagging: Fashion Trend Or Criminal Behavior? By Alan Resendiz
2. Introduction It’s a typical sight on the streets
and schools of east Oakland:
Young males wearing pants below
the waist so that everybody can
see their underwear. The fashion,
which young males, not only in
Oakland, but all the U. S.,
have adopted, is called sagging.
3. What is sagging? According to Margena A. Christian,
sagging is “wearing pants below
the waist so everybody can see
the underwear” (Koppel).
4. Is sagging just for males? Any male can sag, but
it appears to be most
popular among young
men of color. Also,
sagging does not
appear to take place
among females. It is
a male-only trend.
5. Sagging and Zoot Suits: Two Controversies In Fashion History
6. Sagging at Media Academy An observation of students
at Fremont High on Feb. 15, 2008,
showed that eight out of 10
students sag even though
they have a dress code.
7. Sagging: a criminal behavior in some parts of the U.S. Sagging is considering as a criminal
behavior in some parts of the
U S. Where offenders face fines
as much as $500 dollars
or up to six-month
jail sentence (Koppel).
8. Do you think wearing sagging pants is a way to express yourself? Students opinions
9. Is sagging allowed in the OUSD dress code Students opinions
10. Conclusion Research paper indicates that the sagging
look is a controversial issue, and that some
students see it as a freedom of expression
issue. This sagging problem should be
better understood because sagging is a
freedom of expression right that all
Americans have and it’s support it by the
First Amendment of the United States
Constitution.
