Geographical issue evaluation Unit 4B Advance Information Booklet
Objectives • To suggest a set of examination questions about the booklet under a range of appropriate headings • To begin working out answers to these questions
Success Criteria • I have identified a wide range of possible questions
Starter • How do we go about preparing for this exam? • See Textbook page 307-8
Summarise a given set of information • What is the booklet about? Page 3 • Summarise the historical background to Belfast. (p3) • What were the responsibilities of the Laganside Corporation? (p4-5) • How successful has it been? • What further ideas do the Corporation have for development in the area? (p6)
Summarise a given set of information • What are the objectives of the Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy? p8 • How do these compare with the objectives of the Laganside Corporation? • How is the ‘Multiple Deprivation Measure’ arrived at? • Which Neighbourhood renewal area is being studied?
Summarise a given set of information • What is the North Belfast partnership? • Compare the socio-economic characteristics for Inner North Belfast, Belfast and Northern Ireland. • What is a SOA? • Identify the biggest problems in Duncairn 1 SOA and Duncairn 2 SOA
Summarise a given set of information • Summarise the key features of Item 6
Identify problems/issues/concerns • Identify the problems existing in inner city Belfast when the Laganside corporation was set up. • To what extent did the Laganside Corporation address these issues? • To what extent is it true that Laganside only dealt with problems associated with the physical structure of the inner city and left the social problems untouched?
Identify problems/issues/concerns • How did the projects work provide solutions to the problems of unemployment? • To what extent are the problems of inner city Belfast economic and social rather than political? • The SOA data for the Duncairn areas is extremely varied. Highlight the key issues which need to be addressed.
Consider a variety of proposals • Examine the proposals on page 6. To what extent would these enhance Laganside’s legacy? • To what extent would these help to solve the problems of inner city areas such as Duncairn?
Evaluate each of the proposals • Evaluate each of the proposals made on page 6. • Assess the value of the Corporation’s projects in the light of its objectives. (page 4)
Place these proposals in rank order • Put the proposals in rank order from most important/useful to least important
Recommend the best way to manage the proposals in the light of possible problems/conflicts • What problems could arise as a result of the implementation of the proposed schemes? • Now suggest a way round the problems identified
Examine the difficulties that may arise in implementation • Identify any difficulties in the implementation of the proposals. • Which are the most significant difficulties? • Why?
Make a decision • What are you going to do?
Justify a decision • Explain why.
The final question/section • Short and long term effects • Local, regional and national considerations • Spatial (geographical) impacts of each proposal • Social, economic, environmental impacts • Costs and benefits of each proposal • Effects of each proposal on different groups of people in the area
