Kody, Abby, & McKenna False Realities Caused By Social Media
1 What is the PROBLEM? -Young People are being subjected to harmful messages and are given a false reality of what beauty really is. -The expectation for girls= all about looks, has to be skinny, big hair, tan, perfect teeth, and likes to twerk. -The expectation for boys= Unrealistically buff, always tough and “acting like a man”, and objectifying women. -This issue has lead to an increase in eating disorders, depression, and suicide rates. -Society thinks beauty is all about the physical and outer appearance instead of going within and appreciating good, moral character.
PROOF That This is a Major Issue • “Over 24 million people suffer from some form of an eating disorder, and the root of these problems are often linked to the false advertising of the media.”1 • “The average child sees 12,000 violent acts on television annually, including many depictions of murder and rape. Most of these studies confirm that exposure to heavy doses of television violence increases aggressive behavior, particularly in boys.”2 • “Other research has found a relationship between the increase in idealized male bodies in media and the rise in body dissatisfaction and weight disorders in boys and young men.” 3 • “53% of 13-year-old girls are unhappy with their bodies. That number increases to 78% by age 17.”3 • “Television exposes children to adult sexual behaviors in ways that portray these actions as normal and risk-free, sending the message that because these behaviors are frequent, ‘everybody does it’. Sex between unmarried partners is shown 24 times more often than sex between spouses.”2 (1)Camira, Powell. "70% of Women Feel Depressed After Looking at a Fashion Magazine For 3 Minutes." PolicyMic. Celebrities Take A Stand "The world has this idea that if you don't look like an airbrushed perfect model. You have to see past it. You look how you look, you have to be comfortable. What are you going to do? Be hungry every single day to make other people happy? That's just dumb." -Jennifer Lawrence1 2 3 3 (1) "If JLaw Can Be Photoshopped, No One Is Safe." The Huffington Post.
