Scenarios • “we are also working towards ISO 9001 & CMMI compliance – how are we doing both? • “we have already achieved ISO 9001 certification and we would like to see how our CMMI initiative is supporting our 9001 accomplishments” • Variations of above: • If we are CMMI maturity level x, what are the implications for ISO 9001 certification? • If we are ISO 9001 certified, what are the implications for CMMI maturity? David H. Kitson US TAG to TC176 Fall 2005 Meeting

Z1 QM CMMI project group could • Produce a guidance bridging document for ASQ publication &/or ANSI Standard • Define what to add to SEI Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI) level 2 to get to ISO 9001 certification • Define the common auditable elements so the ISO 9001 auditor and CMMI assessor can share audit results without duplication • Define how ISO 9001 surveillance audits can confirm CMMI maturity / capability level • Propose additions to ISO 9004:2008
First Project Meeting Conclusions US TAG to ISO TC176 Meeting Washington, DC 31-Aug-05
Attendees • Scott Bickley, • Bill Brow, • Dave Files • Alka Jarvis, Cisco • Gene Kirsch, • David Kitson, SEI • Baskar Kotes, • Jay Mandelbaum, • Bill McCullough • Chris Paris, IFAN • Raju Ramanathan • Frank Straka • John Walz 31-Aug-05
Problem statement: • too many audits, • too much redundancy / overlap, • isolated standard development & implementation • multiple (combined) overlapping audits 31-Aug-05
Output: Produce a guidance bridging document for input to • “Standards” developers of TC176 standards and CMMI • Auditors and CMMI Assessors of CMMI, ISO 9001 • Implementers of CMMI, ISO 9001, ISO 9004, Consultants, • Include Terminology / Definitions / Concepts (e.g. RSKM vs. Preventive Action) • Guide that focuses on terminology 31-Aug-05
How: US TAG & CMMI experts to work together on a cross-reference table to be used by: Implementers, Auditors, and Registrars • Meetings • Pilots • Publication • Intellectual Property • Version: CMMI 1.2 and ISO 9001:2000 • Target Date: 2006? • ASQ Web site with shared folder of documents 31-Aug-05
Why Z1? • Since ISO TC 176 didn't ask for this help, we are using our common Z1 membership to do this work • What is Z1? • ZI is an ANSI accredited standards committee • Who is in Z1? • Membership can be identical to US TAG to ISO TC 176 membership • How does our work become a formal industry standard or guidance? • Follow the ANS process

CMMI and 9001 Discussion Topics • Synergy between CMMI and 9001 • Equipment Calibration as an omission within CMMI, • Customer satisfaction – is it emphasized enough in CMMI? • Inter-operability and cross-fertilization • Could an organization get “credit” towards 9001 certification as a result of a SCAMPI appraisal? • Are there outputs from a 9001 audit which could be useful as inputs to a SCAMPI appraisal? • What are the right parties to such discussions? • Stove-piped communities – should we be paying more attention to one another? • CMMI approach to Generic Goals – some 9001 clauses map well to GPs while some do not. Any action appropriate? David H. Kitson US TAG to TC176 Fall 2005 Meeting
