2. Welcome to Third Grade! • We will introduce you to third grade and to our curriculum • If you have any questions during our presentation, please feel free to write them down and we will answer them at the end of the presentation.

3. Our Goals for the School Year • To give students the academic and social skills they need to progress to fourth grade. • To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. • To help students make new friends and discover new interests.

4. Goals for Tonight • To help parents understand the curriculum and their respective standards/expectations. • To share information about how parents can support their child’s learning.

5. Behavior and Work Habit Expectations • Third graders are expected to: • Use self-control • Follow directions the first time • Keep hands and feet to self • Be courteous and respectful of others • Work independently • Check over their work • Ask when they don’t understand

6. Tardiness • School starts at 7:45 A.M. • If your child isn’t in the classroom by the time the tardy bell rings, please check in at the school office before coming to class. • If your child is tardy (unexcused) three times, the school will contact you.

7. Class Subjects • The subjects we cover during third grade are: • Reading and writing • Math • Science • Social studies

8. How Do You Know if Your Child is Progressing as a Reader? • In the 3rd Grade, your child should be able to read at least 120 words per minute fluently • Your child should also be able to read with expression (using appropriate tone and inflection)

9. 3rd Grade is a Benchmark Year ! • In the spring, every 3rd grade student must pass the Reading portion of the Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT), with a score of at least 800, in order to be promoted to the fourth grade. • In the case that a student does not receive a passing score, that student has the option of retaking the reading portion of the test during the summer.

10. Reading Tips to Help Your Child Become a Super Reader • Have plenty of reading materials in your home. Give your child a “balanced reading diet” of many different types of age appropriate materials from varied sources. • Read to your child…Children should always hear good models of reading. • Model reading habits regularly…Let your child see you read newspapers, books, magazines, etc. Children should understand that YOU value reading. • Hold discussions and encourage conversation about what your child is reading, and at times, have your child write about what they read. • Control the TV…Watch educational shows on science and history. • Engage your child in informal educational activities. Visit zoos, museums, historic landmarks, etc. to enhance your child’s educational experience. • Value school and learning…Positively acknowledge academic achievements

11. Math • We will use a variety of teaching strategies to enhance our math instruction this year. • Use of hands-on-activities • Manipulatives • Higher order thinking skill / problem solving • Small group instruction

12. Helpful Math Tips • Begin learning multiplication / division facts. • Visit the www.harcourtschool.com. Students will learn how to access the site during our lab time this week. • We will have homework each night. This is a review of concepts taught during class time. • Visit www.georgiastandards.org to see 3rd grade math standards/curriculum.

13. Classwork Expectations What creates A+ students? • Participating in class discussions • Asking questions • Listening to and following directions • Checking over work • Working neatly and accurately

14. Writing • Students will participate daily in writing activities. • Writer’s workshop involves a mini lesson, writing, and sharing • Students will have to write in 4 categories of writing: Narrative, Persuasive, Informative, and Response to Literature.

15. Narrative Writing • Personal Experience • A story with a beginning, middle and end • Most familiar to students

16. Informational Writing • Writing about non-fiction topics • Research • Response to science and social studies

17. Persuasive Writing • Try to convince the reader of a certain point of view • Convincing arguments • Writing with supporting ideas

18. Response to Literature • Book Review • Reading a book and telling your feelings • Book Report • Retelling a story and adding your opinion

19. Social Studies • Learning specific people • How did each person display positive character traits? • How did they contribute to the building of our nation? • Cultural and geographic systems associated with that person

21. Mini Society • Each class becomes a community that works together. • Students are divided into groups that become entrepreneurs. • Behavior earns money for group to buy materials to make their product. • Entrepreneurs will sell their product on market day with the other third grade entrepreneurs.

22. Science Third grade is the first year that students will receive grades in Science. We will study the following topics: • Science Process Skills • Earth Science • Soils • Rocks and Minerals of Georgia • Fossils • Physical Science • Heat energy • Magnet
