  1. SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION Ellis 2003, Chapter 1 NabiellaSyifarani 2201410090

  2. What is Second Language Acquisition ? • The language plays an institutional and social in community or any language learned later in life.

  3. Then can be defined as the way in which people learn a language other than their mother tongue, inside or outside of a classroom.

  4. What are the goals of SLA ? • Describe how learner language changes over time. • Explanation, identifying the external and internal factors that account for why learners acquire an L2 in the way they do

  5. Explanation Describe how L2 acquisition proceeds and to explain this process and why some learners seems to be better at it than others. Examine 2 case studies of L2 leaners

  6. External factors • Culture and status • Motivation • Instruction

  7. Internal Factors Age: Second language acquisition is influenced by the age of the learner.  Personality: Introverted or anxious learners usually make slower progress, particularly in the development of oral skills. Experiences: Learners who have acquired general knowledge and experience are in a stronger position to develop a new language than those who haven't.

  8. The goals of SLA are to describe how L2 acquisition proceeds and to explain this process and why some learners seem to be better at it than others.

  9. Two case studies • Definition of a case studies Enrich the product of language; written or spoken • A case study of an adult learner 1. Use gesture, intonation, demonstration, actions and facial expressions. 2. Use tasks, either real or invented. 3. Play games. 4. Introduce narratives and other types of discourse. 5. Formal grammatical analysis is useful .

  10. 6. Focus-on-form teaching is recommended. 7. Encourage phonetic analysis and reflection. 8. Provide frequent phonetic feedback.

  11. A case study of two child learners 1. Use gesture, intonation, demonstration, actions and facialexpressions. 2. Use children’s communicative needs to provide language and play games 3. Use real tasks . 4. Introduce narratives .

  12. 5. Formal grammar teaching might not prove beneficial . 6. Introduce indirect phonetic teaching 7. Provide phonetic feedback .

  13. Methodological issues • Some problems in acquiring second language is faced Acquisition of L2 conflates what leaners know with what they can do. Learners have acquire a particular feature . In trying to measure wether ‘acquisition’ has taken place concerns learners overuse of linguistic forms.

  14. Issues in the discription of leaners language The learners make error of different kinds Learners acquire a large number of formulaic chunks Learners acquire the language systematically Based on the case studies can be taken the discription

  15. Issues in the Explanation of L2 Acquistion The hypothesis that L2 acquistion involves different kinds of learning • learners internalize chunks of language structure
