In fact, they can be dated back to the medieval periods. Usually these were worn by the army troops in the beginning and showed their unity and valour. They also served as means for their identification as a group. These were usually made of metal in the beginning, but were also crafted with silk and other embellishments when used to adorn castles and poles. Coat of arms symbols and meanings is a comprehensive study in itself, with many historical names and events revolving around these standards and insignia. With the gradual end of the violent periods of conquests, these family crests lost their three dimensional representations and were confined to the two dimensional depictions on metal sheets as well as cloths. Their two dimensional nature meant that these could now be much easily depicted and reproduced. These were then adopted by the aristocratic families across Europe. Coat of arms were gifted to decorated individuals and then adorned by their families as a mark of their identification. These were gradually used even by non aristocratic families as a status symbol. Now days, many online artists have kept the art alive by creating reproductions of historical crests or designing new ones, as per the customers’ demand. They make these from the ground up, and offer them on a variety of materials. The cost obviously varies on the materials used and the amount of labour put in by the artist.
