Purpose of the Clutch • Primary purpose is to transmit torque from the engine to the transmission • A secondary purpose is to permit shifting of gears when stopped
Clutch Components • Release Bearing • Clutch Fork • Springs • Pressure Plate and Cover • Clutch Disc • Flywheel
Operation of the Clutch • The operator presses on the clutch pedal, it moves the rod attached to the release yoke • The release yoke pulls the release bearing • The release bearing pulls the pressure plate levers, pulling the pressure plate away from the clutch disc
Clutch Operation • Spring pressure causes the pressure plate to squeeze the clutch disc against the flywheel • The friction against the flywheel and pressure plate transmits power (torque)
