Origins • Founded during Warring States Period • First used as political system in Han empire
Mencius • Next most famous after Confucius • Believed power of the king came from the masses • Had more influence than Confucius did during his lifetime • Humans are innately good
Xun Zi vs. Zhu Xi (312-230 BCE) (1130-1200 CE) Continued following Mencius’ belief in innate goodness Founded Neo-Confucianism, the modern interpretation of Confucius’ teachings • Humans are innately bad • Need to be taught to be good • Considered heretic by Zhu Xi
Philosophy, not Religion • No belief in deities included • No organized hierarchy • Other religions can be practiced and you can still be a Confucian • Way of living your life
