  1. Chapter 9 Motion and Energy Section 3:Acceleration • What kind of motion does acceleration refer to? • How do you calculate acceleration? • What graphs can be used to analyze the motion of an accelerating object?

  2. Types of Acceleration… • Accelerating-An object’s speed increases over time • Deceleration/negative acceleration- an object’s speed decreases over time • Instantaneous Acceleration-How fast an object is going at any one point. • Any change in direction is also considered a type of acceleration • Since direction matters, acceleration is a vector.

  3. Acceleration…. • Is any change in velocity (speed and direction) per unit time • How much time does it take you to speed up your speed, slow down your speed or change direction?

  4. Cars….. • Watch the arrow on a speedometer. If it stays at 60km/h, speed is constant, traveling at a constant speed, speed is not getting any faster or slower…. No acceleration.

  5. If the arrow on the speedometer starts moving forward, you are increasing your speed over time or accelerating. Your speed is getting faster and faster over time.

  6. You will hear car commercials say “it can go from 0-60 mph in 6 seconds”….its talking about acceleration. It can speed up its speed in a certain period of time.

  7. Chapter 9 Motion and Energy Calculating Acceleration • To determine the acceleration of an object, you must calculate its change in velocity per unit of time.

  8. Acceleration = Final Velocity-Initial Velocity Time

  9. Problem • As a rollercoaster car starts down a slope, its velocity is 4m/s. But 3 seconds later, its velocity is 22m/s in the same direction. What is its acceleration?

  10. Problem • As a rollercoaster car starts down a slope, its velocity is 4m/s. But 3 seconds later, its velocity is 22m/s in the same direction. What is its acceleration? • 22-4 = 3

  11. Problem • As a rollercoaster car starts down a slope, its velocity is 4m/s. But 3 seconds later, its velocity is 22m/s in the same direction. What is its acceleration? • 22-4 = 18 = 3 3

  12. Problem • As a rollercoaster car starts down a slope, its velocity is 4m/s. But 3 seconds later, its velocity is 22m/s in the same direction. What is its acceleration? • 22-4 = 18 = 6m/s2 3 3

  13. Chapter 9 Motion and Energy Graphing Acceleration • You can use both a speed-versus-time graph and a distance-versus-time graph to analyze the motion of an accelerating object.

  14. Questions 1. What are three ways an object can accelerate? 2. Describe how a baseball player accelerates as he runs around the bases after hitting a home run. 3. What formula do you use to calculate acceleration of an object moving in a straight line? 4. What does a straight line on a distance vs. time graph mean? What does a curved line mean? Write 2 AHA’s on your light bulb page! One for Friday’s lab and 1 for today.
